Lower Tier Cooking Programs

Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem for the Clean Cooking (SEE-CC) program with support from GIZ & SNV (January, 2021 – December, 2025)

The program is implemented by GIZ and SNV Uganda, co-financed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Commission, the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). The project has the following components:

African Biodigester Component(ABC)

The project will facilitate the construction and installation of 8,000 small-scale biodigesters in Uganda by the end of 2025.

The project seeks to address negative environmental, social and economic impacts of charcoal production by promoting sustainable charcoal production practices, including establishment of energy woodlots, adoption of more efficient charcoal production kilns and rehabilitation of degraded natural forests on private land.

The “NAMA on Integrated Waste Management and Biogas in Uganda” project aims to provide environmental benefits and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from improper and inadequate management and treatment of wastewater and organic waste in towns, municipalities, cities, and agro‐processing industry in Uganda. Project components include;

  1. Enhanced capacity of municipalities to develop waste management plans and manage municipal solid waste and wastewater in a more sustainable manner;
  2. Biogas and WWT plants using MSW feedstock and sewage sludge procured and fully operational;
  3. Biogas technology replicated in other potential municipalities with the help of a grant and technical assistance fund.

The objective of the project is to secure multiple environmental benefits by addressing the twin challenges of unsustainable utilization of fuel wood (including charcoal) and poor land management practices common in Uganda’s woodlands. The project components include:

  1. Data collection and improved coordination and enforcement of regulations governing the biomass energy sector, in particular those related to sustainable charcoal;
  2. Dissemination of appropriate technologies for sustainable charcoal production in selected charcoal-producing districts;
  3. Strengthening the capacity of key stakeholders in SFM and SLM best practices and establishment of sustainable woodlot.

The aim of this project is to lead to reduced poverty and adapted institutions, ecosystems and livelihoods in the face of climate change. Components of the project include:

  1. Strengthening the institutional environment and capacity for planning and implementation of climate adaptation;
  2. Improving ecosystem integrity for climate resilience;
  3. Building climate-resilient and nature-positive livelihoods.
